Lesson 7

At the Hotel

Handle hotel check-in, check-out, room requests, and common complaints.

Korean hotel check-in follows international norms with a few Korean-specific touches. Bring your passport (여권) — it is required by law for foreign guests. Key vocabulary: 체크인 (check-in), 체크아웃 (check-out), 예약 (reservation), 방 (room), 키 (key), 와이파이 비밀번호 (Wi-Fi password). Standard requests: 일찍 체크인할 수 있어요? (can I check in early?), 늦은 체크아웃 가능해요? (can I do a late checkout?).

Korean hotels often have specific room types: 온돌방 (ondol, traditional heated floor with bedding rather than a Western bed) and 침대방 (bed room, Western-style). If you have a strong preference, specify when booking. For complaints: 에어컨이 안 돼요 (the AC doesn't work), 와이파이가 안 돼요 (Wi-Fi doesn't work), 너무 시끄러워요 (too noisy). Korean hotel staff are generally responsive to complaints when phrased politely, especially with -주세요 attached to your request.

-(으)로 바꿔 주세요 — Request a change

Use N+(으)로 바꿔 주세요 to ask to change or swap something. After a consonant: 으로, after a vowel or ㄹ: 로. Common in hotels when requesting a different room or item.

더 조용한 방으로 바꿔 주세요.deo joyonghan bangeuro bakkwo juseyoPlease change me to a quieter room.
수건을 더 가져다 주세요.sugeoneul deo gajyeoda juseyoPlease bring more towels.

-아/어 주시겠어요? — Very polite request

A very polite way to make a request, more formal than -아/어 주세요. Often used when asking hotel staff for assistance. Verb stem + 아/어 주시겠어요?

짐을 방까지 올려다 주시겠어요?jimeul bangkkaji ollyeoda jusigesseoyoCould you bring my luggage up to the room?
모닝콜을 여섯 시로 맞춰 주시겠어요?moningkoreul yeoseot siro matchwo jusigesseoyoCould you set a wake-up call for 6 o'clock?

How It Works

-(으)로 바꿔 주세요 combines three pieces you already know: the (으)로 particle marking a target, 바꾸다 ('to change'), and the 주세요 request form. Seeing it as a combination rather than a new formula makes it generative — you can swap 바꾸다 for other verbs and keep the shape.

-아/어 주시겠어요? is a politeness upgrade on 주세요. The -시- is the subject honorific, elevating the person you are asking, and -겠- adds a conditional softness roughly equivalent to 'would you'. Together they produce a request that is noticeably more deferential than 주세요 without being stiff.

The register difference matters. 주세요 is perfectly polite and works in most situations. 주시겠어요? is what you use when asking for something beyond the ordinary — a favour rather than a service, or a request to someone whose time you are taking. In a hotel, staff will use honorific forms towards you, and matching some of that register back is appropriate.

Note that requests in Korean frequently use -(으)ㄴ데요 or -는데요 to trail off politely rather than stating a demand outright. 방을 바꾸고 싶은데요 leaves the request implicit, which is softer than stating it directly, and you will hear this pattern constantly in service settings.

Where You'll Hear It

Check-in follows a predictable script. 체크인 하려고 하는데요 opens it, and staff will ask for 여권 (passport) and confirm the 예약. Korean hotels almost always ask for a passport from foreign guests, including at smaller guesthouses.

Room requests are where this lesson's grammar earns its place. 더 조용한 방으로 바꿔 주세요 asks for a quieter room, and the same shape handles floor preference, bed type or a non-smoking room by swapping the noun.

조식 is worth knowing as a separate word from 아침, since hotels use it specifically for breakfast service. 조식 몇 시부터예요? asks when it starts.

Korean accommodation has its own categories that do not map onto Western terms. A 모텔 is not a roadside motel in the American sense but a common form of short-stay accommodation; a 게스트하우스 often includes shared spaces; and a 한옥 stay offers traditional architecture with floor-based sleeping. Knowing these distinctions prevents booking something other than what you expected.

불편하다 covers a wide range of complaints from uncomfortable to inconvenient, and 에어컨이 안 돼요 ('the air conditioning isn't working') is the shape most equipment complaints take.

Cultural & Language Note

Korean hotels often distinguish between 온돌 rooms with floor heating and traditional bedding and standard bed rooms, and the choice is offered at booking. 조식 is the Sino-Korean word for hotel breakfast and appears on signage far more than the native equivalent. Check-in typically requires ID or passport even for domestic guests.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

아/어 주시겠어요 is a notch more polite than 아/어 주세요 and is the right register for hotel staff when asking for something beyond the basics. Learners often either stay at 주세요 throughout or jump straight to the very formal 습니다 style, which sounds oddly stiff in a service exchange.

How to Practice This Lesson

Build one request template and reuse it rather than memorising separate sentences. [noun]으로 바꿔 주세요 handles rooms, towels, pillows and anything else by swapping the noun. Practise it with five different nouns so the pattern, not the sentence, is what you retain.

Practise both politeness levels on the same request so you can feel the difference: 수건 좀 주세요 versus 수건 좀 가져다 주시겠어요?. Hearing them back to back makes the register distinction concrete in a way that an explanation does not.

Learn the -는데요 trailing form as a recognition target at minimum. You will hear it constantly from staff and in service situations, and understanding that it softens rather than states makes those exchanges much easier to follow.

Finally, rehearse check-in and check-out as complete scripts. They are highly standardised, which means a script prepared in advance will match the real conversation closely.
