Lesson 9

Advanced SNS & Internet Slang

Go beyond ㅋㅋ — learn Korean internet slang, meme expressions, and fandom vocabulary used online.

Korean internet slang evolves rapidly — terms popular in 2023 are sometimes already dated in 2026. This lesson covers the durable core that has stayed in use for years: 존맛탱 (extremely delicious, often shortened to JMT in romanised form), 인싸/아싸 (insider/outsider — popular/unpopular), 갓생 (god-life, a meticulously disciplined daily routine), 꿀팁 (honey tip, useful tip), 짤 (a meme image), 띠로리 (a sound effect indicating shock or disappointment).

Fandom vocabulary deserves its own section because K-pop and K-drama communities have generated extensive specialised terminology. 최애 (favourite, often referring to a favourite member of a K-pop group), 덕질 (fan activity, from 덕후 — geek), 본진 (main group, your top fandom). These terms cross over into mainstream Korean enough that recognising them helps with everyday conversation among younger speakers. Treat slang as a moving target — learn the patterns rather than memorising lists, since lists go out of date quickly.

Korean Internet Abbreviations & Shortenings

Online Korean shrinks words aggressively: 취향 저격 → 취저 (fave), 남자친구 → 남친 (boyfriend), 여자친구 → 여친 (girlfriend), 오늘의 기분 → 오기 (today's mood), 현실 남자친구 → 현남친. Also: 레전드 (legend/legendary), 최애 (ultimate fave), 본진 (main fandom).

Reaction Expressions & Meme Phrases

Common online reactions: 실화냐? (Is this real?), 미쳤다 (Crazy! — used positively), 개좋다 / 개웃기다 (so good / so funny — 개 intensifies), 나만 이래? (Is it just me?), 공감 (relatable / I feel this), 이게 맞나? (Is this right / Is this okay?).

How It Works

Korean internet slang operates by a small number of productive mechanisms, and knowing the mechanisms lets you decode expressions you have never seen.

The main one is truncation to two syllables. 남자친구 becomes 남친, 여자친구 becomes 여친, 취향 저격 becomes 취저, 최고 애정 becomes 최애. Korean compresses compound nouns by keeping the first syllable of each element, which is the same principle that produces abbreviations in formal Korean too.

The second is 개 as an intensifier. Originally meaning 'dog' and historically pejorative, it now functions as a general amplifier in casual speech: 개좋다 ('so good'), 개웃기다 ('so funny'). The pejorative history is why it remains informal and is inappropriate in most written or professional contexts.

The third is repurposing existing words. 미쳤다 literally means 'went crazy' but is used as high praise, similar to English 'insane' as a compliment. 실화냐 literally asks 'is it a true story' and functions as 'is this real'.

Fandom vocabulary forms its own layer: 최애 for a favourite member, 본진 for one's main group, 입덕 for becoming a fan. 덕 derives from 오덕후, itself a Korean rendering of the Japanese オタク, which then generated a whole family of Korean words.

Where You'll Hear It

This vocabulary lives online and among young people, and the register boundary is sharp. 개좋다 in a work message would land badly, in the same way that heavy slang would in any language.

대박 has crossed over into general use and is said by people of all ages, but most of the rest in this lesson has not. 미쳤다 and 실화냐 are casual-only, and 개 as an intensifier is markedly young.

Comment sections on YouTube, Instagram and Korean portals are where this language actually appears, and reading comments is genuinely good practice because the sentences are short and the reactions are predictable.

공감 ('relatable') is worth knowing because it structures a lot of online interaction — Korean comment culture places heavy weight on shared experience, and 완전 공감 is among the most common replies you will see.

Fandom vocabulary is worth learning if you follow Korean music, because it is unavoidable in that space and essentially unsearchable if you do not know the derivation. 입덕 부정기 ('the denial phase of becoming a fan') is the kind of compound that makes no sense until you know both parts.

Slang also ages quickly. Expressions from five years ago can already mark you as out of date.

Cultural & Language Note

Korean internet slang turns over fast, and much of it is built by clipping longer phrases: 취저 from 취향 저격, 갬성 from 감성. Fandom vocabulary like 최애 and 덕질 has crossed into mainstream speech, and 덕질 itself derives from Japanese オタク by way of 오덕후. The borrowing runs in both directions between the two internet cultures.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Slang has a shelf life, and using expressions that peaked several years ago marks you as out of touch more than not using slang at all. It is also strictly peer-register — none of this belongs in email, workplace chat, or conversation with anyone older. When in doubt, understand it without producing it.

How to Practice This Lesson

Learn the three mechanisms rather than a word list, because the list will be out of date within a couple of years while the mechanisms persist. Practise truncating compounds yourself and check whether your guess matches real usage.

Read comment sections as your primary source. They are free, current, and full of short sentences, which makes them better practice material than curated slang lists that are already stale.

Keep this vocabulary strictly passive unless you are young, online, and confident about the register. Recognition has clear value; production has real risk, and misjudged slang is more conspicuous than a grammar error.

Check currency before using anything. If you learned an expression from a video three years old, assume it may have dated. Asking a Korean friend whether people still say something is a normal question and usually gets an amused but useful answer.

For fandom vocabulary, learn the derivations. Knowing that 덕 comes from 오덕후 makes 입덕, 탈덕 and 덕질 immediately transparent rather than three separate items.
